Gamecube and Playstation 2 expanding online capabilities
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:30:41 AEST
Both Nintendo and Sony have made these press releases over the last day or two:

This week, Nintendo of America Inc. releases its Broadband Adapter and Modem Adapter that will make it possible to use the Gamecube as a platform for Internet-enhanced video game play.
The online adapters launch in North America only weeks after a successful Japan launch where swift sales left many store shelves empty. Domestically, a few retailers who already received early shipments of the product have sold out.
The adapters will enable Gamecube players to easily connect through dial-up, cable modem or DSL. Both the Broadband Adapter and Modem Adapter carry a suggested retail price of US$34.95 each.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) also announced yesterday that PlayStation 2 broadband network gaming will be launched in the Spring of 2003, beginning with the UK. This will be followed by a phased rollout into Germany, France, Spain, Australia other SCEE territories throughout 2003.
The SCEE announcement follows the highly successful launch of PlayStation 2 online gaming earlier this year in North America and Japan. In both regions, PlayStation 2 has become the leading online console gaming platform.
Looks like the competition is really start to heat up. So who will emerge victorious?

Capcom vs SNK 2 EO confirmed to have X-Box Live capability
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:02:18 AEST
That's right folks...previously only a rumour, it has now been confirmed, the X-Box version of this old school 2D fighter will have X-Box Live compatibility, meaning you can play the game against anyone, anywhere in the world! This is the first fighter in the world to do so. Coupled with the voice chat capabilities of the X-Box, not only can you beat your opponent to a pulp, you can also verbally abuse them! :)
EO of course stands for "Extreme Offense", meaning the game will be very much dependent on how well you can attack. Of course the game is already available for the Gamecube, but it doesn't take advantage of the online gaming aspect like the X-Box version will. We've also now added some new screenshots of the Gamecube version of Capcom vs SNK 2 EO into our image gallery, follow the link "Street Fighter" under the images heading on the left menu to find them.
You can expect the game to be released on X-Box Live on November 19th.

Site Downtime
Posted by White_Pointer @ 16:17:06 AEST
Our host seems to be experiencing problems right now right across the board, even their own homepage was down for a period of time, which meant that Blood-Sports.net was down for a good proportion of 6-8 hours earlier. The site still seems rather slow, so it doesn't look like they have all the bugs ironed out yet, so cross your fingers that the problems will be sorted out soon. It's really out of our hands. We'll notify you what is going on as soon as we find out ourselves. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

M-rated games taking over?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:54:43 AEST
Again, not strictly Blood-Sports related, but it is related in some way. MSNBC have reported that M-rated video games are the fastest growing market in the gaming industry. With the average age of their audience rising, they need to start catering more for the more mature gamer, and so M-Rated titles are very quickly becoming more and more popular. Of course, as we all know most fighters are rated M or sometimes even higher, so we can expect to see even more games achieve this rating from now on.

Video games get pulled off shelves
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:46:57 AEST
While this isn't directly related to the games we cover here at Blood-Sports.net, this is news that the whole gaming community should know about. In the light of the recent sniper attacks in the USA, WalMart, in their infinite knowledge of the gaming industry, have taken at least seven games off the shelves, including Terminator, Dawn of Fate, Tribes Aerial Assault and Rainbow Six, and Rogue Spear, as well as some other FPS's. Why? Because they say it exposes people to violence. They claim that if people didn't have violence in their life, then they wouldn't be as violent. Never mind the fact that the prime suspect is an ex-marine...never mind the fact that people are exposed to violence every day on TV and at the movies. Let's just blame it all on Video games because Video games are evil.
Some people have no brain.

Playstation 2 leading the console sales
Posted by White_Pointer @ 11:12:03 AEST
Despite Microsoft's release of their X-Box and Nintendo's release of the Gamecube, Sony is still outselling their competition with the Playstation 2. According to In-Stat/MDR, the current gaming console market shipped 31.8 million units and generated nearly US$7.4 billion in revenues in 2001. The numbers are really becoming quite extraordinary. This means the video game market made more revenue than the movie box office. In the middle of September, Sony shipped their 40 millionth Playstation 2 unit, confirming that they have a firm stranglehold on the current console market, with Nintendo and Microsoft currently battling it out for second position. In-Stat/MDR predicts that this coming holiday season will be what determines the overall success of the Gamecube, when their franchise titles such as Mario and Zelda, which have typically been Nintendo's biggest sellers, are released.

Dead or Alive:Extreme Beach Volleyball available for Pre-order
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:28:43 AEST
It's worth mentioning that you can now pre-order the spinoff game to Dead or Alive that will no doubt attract the male audience, Dead or Alive:Extreme Beach Volleyball from Tecmo's site here. Note that we won't be actually covering this game on Blood-Sports.net. Even though it carries the Dead or Alive name, it IS spinoff game and it isn't a fighter and technically not part of the series. We'll be expecting the next real game in the series late 2003-early 2004.

New Capcom Fighting All Stars Screenshots
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:27:41 AEST
Well, it's not many at the moment, only seven of them, but it's a number that will continue to grow quite rapidly I am assuming. As we all know by now the next Fighter Capcom is developing has been given the title Capcom Fighting All Stars, and you can see the screenshots we have by clicking the Street Fighter link under images, or simply clicking here
From these initial screens, even though there isn't many of them, the game already looks ten times better than the EX series at this early stage, so Capcom fans, this looks like the game that will break the drought of the mediocre 3D Street Fighter games.

More Godzilla:Destroy All Monsters Melee Reviews
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:32:30 AEST
Well, Reviews for Godzilla:Destroy All Monsters Melee keep coming in, even though the game has been released for a few weeks now...I guess Nintendo PR's have been a little slack supplying sites with a copy to review. If you are still indecisive about buying the game, then here are a few more opinions to consider:

36/40 - Gamecube Advanced
3/10 - Gamesplurge
7.0/10 - Nintendophiles

Again, it seems overall that most reviewers think it hits the mark and is quite fun, especially in multiplayer with only Gamepslurge so far to give it a bad review. So the signs for Atari and Infrogrames look quite promising. Don't forget, if you want to voice your own opinion on the game, discuss it in our forums!

Interview with Hiroaki Yotoriyama on Soul Calibur II
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:03:18 AEST
Gamecube Advanced have scored themselves an Interview with one of the big wigs in charge of bringing the very anticipated Soul Calibur II to the next gen consoles, Hiroaki Yotoriyama. He talks about it's current development, the differences between the home versions from the arcade version, and what motivates himself and his team to create such a game. However he still doesn't answer the question everyone wants to know, when will it be released? I guess we need to keep crossing our fingers (and any other parts of our anatomy) in the hope that it isn't too far away.
The full Interview can be read at Gamecube Advanced Here.

Robot Alchemic Drive by Enix to be released November 5th
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:43:50 AEST
This game is a robot game like no other, and if you are an anime fan, you will definately love it. Enix's description of the game is as follows:

Prepare to bond with 75 tons of high-tensile robot. Direct every movement of your machine and slug your way to victory over colossal opponents in brutal hand-to-hand combat (plus missiles, lasers, shooting fists, boomerangs, and much more). Freeway overpass in the way? Take it down. Buildings crowding you? Knock 'em over.

Much more than a simple action game, Robot Alchemic Drive accurately simulates the operation of a remote-controlled metal titan in crowded, active urban environments. Use your giant robot as a tool to defeat enemies, complete missions, and much more.
Sounds very interesting and quite original too. Not a whole lot has been revealed about the gameplay however so far, so we aren't exactly sure if this game is material to be covered here at Blood-Sports.net...however a decision will be made within the next few days, and if we do cover it, you'll see the new section up and running before the game is shipped on the 5th of November. In the meantime, if you are interested in the game, check out Enix's Official RAD site.

Microsoft announces X-Box launch dates for Asia
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:02:42 AEST
Well, despite Asia having the highest software piracy rate in the world, Microsoft have set the release dates for the X-Box for the Asian market. Singapore and Hong Kong will get the console on November 22nd, and Taiwan will get it a week later on the 29th.
Microsoft actually admits that they will more than likely lose money by entering the Asian market because of the high piracy rates, but they are willing to try and push the sale of the console regardless. The Xbox will be priced competitively at a recommended retail price of HK$1,599 in Hong Kong, S$388 (inclusive of GST) in Singapore and NT$7,490 (inclusive of GST) in Taiwan. These figures convert to roughly US$200, the current retail price of the X-Box.
Time will tell if it will be successful.

New age rating system for games in Europe
Posted by White_Pointer @ 10:07:41 AEST
Apparently, According to Gamespot, Europe will be enforcing a new rating system on their video/computer games, which won't be related to the difficulty of the game in any way, but rather in an effort to try and make sure the younger kids aren't exposed unsuitable content. The new rating system will be as follows: Aged three and over, seven and over, 12 and over, 16 and over, and 18 and over. This, of course, affects fighting games, and you'll probably expect to see most of them appearing in the latter two categories because of their violence factor.
The full story can be read here.
Still, this new system shouldn't disadvantage the hardcore fighting fans in Europe much, since I'm assuming most of the players of fighting games would probably be of the older generation anyway.

Deathrow Ships for X-Box
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:37:12 AEST
Well, it's a game we haven't covered here at Blood-Sports.net until this very news post, but it's a game that will definately have its own dedicated section.
Ubisoft have published this press release:

Ubi Soft Entertainment, one of the world's largest video game publishers, today announced that it shipped its fast-paced, brutal team combat game, Deathrow, to U.S. retail stores. Deathrow is an exclusive title for the Xbox(tm) video game system from Microsoft, combining the lightning-fast gameplay of third-person action games, adrenaline rush of fighting games and the cooperative team play and gritty roughness of rugby to offer a unique gameplay experience. Deathrow is rated "M" for mature and has an MSRP of $49.99.

"Deathrow is the perfect blend of fighting and sports game, delivering the adrenaline rush action gamers want, in large, quick doses," said Matthieu Boulard, producer for Ubi Soft Entertainment. "Deathrow is extremely addictive thanks to its pure unbridled gameplay, highly-polished artificial intelligence, badass characters and breathtaking arenas that include what many are calling the best textures since Halo."
This game certainly looks like a lot of fun, and we'll have a new section dedicated to it very soon, so stay tuned!

Soul Calibur II Version D due in arcades this month, but nothing yet for the consoles
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:59:29 AEST
Yep, it's been confirmed, you can expect Version D of Soul Calibur II to hit the arcades by the end of this month. Still no official word on when the home versions will be released for the next-gen consoles however, but at this stage it doesn't look to be due until early 2003...so die-hard SC fans, it looks as though you'll need to be content with the new arcade version, for now.
Reliable SCII news is quite hard to come by, if you have any news of your own, why not send it to us?

X-Box to stay in Australia?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:15:57 AEST
Well, no sooner do we post news that Microsoft were thinking of pulling the plug on the X-Box Down Under, when we get this report from Chicago X-Box:

Microsoft Corp. (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people) has no intention of withdrawing its Xbox video game console from Australia despite reports it was considering such a move in a dispute over a copyright law, the company said on Tuesday.
Australian newspaper The Age reported last Friday that Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, angry over a court ruling that allowed an individual there to sell after-market chips that modify game consoles, had said the company would have to reconsider selling its console there.
A company spokeswoman told Reuters Ballmer's remarks were not specifically related to the Xbox, which she said Microsoft was committed to selling in Australia.
After-market "mod" chips allow gamers to copy games and run games intended for other consoles on the Xbox as well as circumventing other built-in security features.
Microsoft's strategy has been to sell the Xbox game machine at a loss in order to make profits on the higher margin game software.
The console sells for A$399 ($220.65) in Australia. (A$1 = $0.55)

Looks like Aussie X-Box fans can breathe easy for a while, although we are still waiting for some official word from Microsoft to confirm this.

Microsoft may pull the X-Box from the Australian Market
Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:25:46 AEST
Well, not strictly Fighter news, but if many Australians are looking forward to the next Dead or Alive games, or any other new fighters that may be released for it, they may find themselves disappointed.

Gamespot has reported that Microsoft is seriously considering taking it's X-Box off Australian shelves in a aggresive stance against mod chips. Australian laws say there is nothing wrong with adding a chip to the hardware which is designed to bypass security, it's only against the law to sell, buy or own pirated software. Of course this didn't sit well with Microsoft, they want to make money, and the mod chip is obviously preventing them from making a lot of it in Australia.
The full report can be read Here
One wonders how popular Microsoft's decision would be if they pull through and do it...I'm sure there would be angry customers wanting to know why they spent $400 on a machine which will be getting no new games. Some may predict this could be the start of the X-Box's demise (some say it's started already). We'll see.

Another death due to continuous computer game playing
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:59:46 AEST
Wow, it's a disease. This is the second death due to continuously playing computer games this month.

Australia's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper has reported this:

A 27-year-old Taiwanese man died yesterday after playing video games in a cyber cafe for 32 hours continuously.
Lien Wen-cheng arrived at the cyber cafe in Fengyuan in central Taiwan at 10.30pm on Thursday and played video games non-stop, pausing only to go to the toilet, police said.
At 7am on Saturday, a staff member found Lien foaming at the mouth and bleeding from the nose on the floor of the cafe's toilet.
"They rushed him to hospital but he was already dead," local police said.
Police suspect Lien died from exhaustion, having sat in the same position for too long.

This guy was playing for less than half the time the first guy was playing for (86 hours) but he has still kicked the bucket. You heard it right here kids, play games to your heart's content, but take a break now and then or you may find yourself in a spot of bother.

Yet another reason to buy this awesome game. And of course, if you can't wait for the game to listen to some of the soundtrack, then watch MTV!

So far the game has received pretty positive reviews, but of course not everyone has the same opinion.

Poll Results
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:57:07 AEST
Well, here's a look at the previous poll results:

What other games would you like to see a movie for?

34.3% - Killer Instinct
34.3% - Tekken
15.6% - Soul Calibur
9.3% - Dead or Alive
6.2% - Super Smash Bros

Well, it seems that Killer Instinct and Tekken drew a dead heat as far as what movie people would most like to see. It's hardly surprising, they both have great storylines.

Mortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance Gameboy Advance Screenshots

And I thought Tekken Advance looked impressive! Keep in mind the game isn't due for another month yet, so I get the feling we ain't seen nothing yet! It's games like this that show us just what power Nintendo's new hand held console really has.

More reviews for Godzilla:Destroy All Monsters Melee
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:59:50 AEST
As usual with the release of a new game, we get more reviews. Strangely enough a lot of the major Nintendo websites haven't reviewed the game yet, probably due to it's earlier than expected release, but here is a couple more for your reading pleasure:

9.0 - Nintendo Next Gen
4 1/2 stars - The Medaverse

Initial opinions certainly point in the right direction! Could this finally be the game to break the plague of the crappy Godzilla games?

Capcom announces Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo for GBA
Posted by White_Pointer @ 23:47:40 AEST
While not strictly Street Fighter, this is worth mentioning. Capcom have announced that they will be making the highly acclaimed and addicting Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo for the Gameboy Advance. This enjoyable puzzle game that featured deformed Street Fighter characters became hugely popular in 1997, and now Capcom are bringing that success to the GBA.

It looks like a lot of fun, with miniature Street Fighter icons battling it out as you play the puzzles head to head Tetris-style. And of course, it'll be multiplayer compatible using the link cable.

No exact release date has been set yet. You can read the whole press release Here

Fighters.net going under?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:59:54 AEST
Well, cka has announced that Fighters.net, the definitive source for fighting games, is probably seeing it's last days, due to their hosts claiming that they cannot handle the massive amount of traffic the site was receiving. This is indeed sad news, it was definately the best source for fighters on the Internet, and we do hope that they can come to some kind of comprimise with their hosts to keep their great site running. However, at this stage, it doesn't look likely, so if you want to have one last chance of grabbing some of the downloads they have on offer and post in the forums one last time, go over to Fighters.net and give them your support. They did a fantastic job on the site for a long time, and it must be heartbreaking for the webmasters and staff, after all their work, for it to have to come to this.

Man dies after continuously playing computer games
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:16:19 AEST
Well, we wouldn't normally report this unless it had something to do with the games we cover, but in this case we can make an exception. Gamespot has reported this little tidbit of information:

A man has died after an 86-hour gaming marathon. The incident occurred at an Internet café in a town 160 miles southwest of Seoul, where the man, who was unemployed, had been "virtually glued" to a computer since Friday, skipping sleep and meals. The man collapsed near the café's counter and was later found dead in the restroom. Many Internet cafés in South Korea are open 24 hours a day.

I've heard of being addicted to computer games, but this is ridiculous. No details have been released about what game he was playing however. But let this be a lesson to you kiddies, when playing games, stopping occasionally to eat and sleep is usually a good idea.

History of Fighters has begun!
Posted by GooberMan @ 12:59:58 AEST
Well, yeah, I couldn't think of a better title, but anyway, the reason I'm still on the staff for this site is that I will be writing articles on classic fighting games - some that people know, others that might be a bit obscure. There are currently two articles up - International Karate +, and Double Dragon. You can access the articles via the link in the features column on the side, or if you're a lazy bastard like me you can click here to go to the index, or click on the direct links to each article highlighted above.

Next Dead or Alive not due anytime soon
Posted by White_Pointer @ 11:33:26 AEST
Dead or Alive 4, now officially confirmed to be named Dead or Alive : Code Chronos, won't be due anytime soon, Team Ninja announced last week. They are currently furiously working on Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball, a spinoff game to the Dead or Alive series to have it finished by November. This means we won't be seeing Dead or Alive : Code Chronos until late 2003 or even early 2004.
If you are looking forward to seeing the Dead or Alive girls scantily clad in bikinis then you'll be looking forward to DOA:EBV, however the true next title in series won't be arriving anytime soon.

Dead or Alive 4 confirmed for X Box
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:45:54 AEST
Just like Dead or Alive 3, the next installment of the Dead or Alive series will be exclusive to X-Box. Not many other details have been announced yet, only that it will definately be made. I guess it makes sense, after the runaway success of the first three, they would be stupid not to make another.

Microsoft buys Rare
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:50:03 AEST
Yes, it has been confirmed, although we are a little late to report it since I've been doing so much backend work on the site. But yes, Microsoft has bought Rare, the developers of the Killer Instinct series, from Nintendo. What does this mean? Well, probably not much, aside from the fact that you'll see Rare games developed for the X-Box now instead of the Gamecube. Does this also mean we could see a change in Rare's decision about not developing Killer Instinct 3 anytime soon? Time will tell.
