Ed Boon speaks on the next Mortal Kombat
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:36:50 AEST
Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine have scored themselves an Interview with Mortal Kombat co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias as part of a 10-year celebration of the MK series in their October 2003 issue. As part of the Interview Ed Boon confirms what was announced earlier this year that the next instalment in the MK series will have online capabilities.

"I'm working on a follow-up to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Our big thing that we're researching now is online. A lot of the magic of Mortal Kombat was the whole arcade social scenario, where you're playing strangers, and how many wins in a row can you get, king of the hill, and all that stuff. That was a really huge part of the game's success. So we really feel that online is the potential next way to re-create that whole phenomenon. We don't have a ship date yet, but we're shooting for 2004."
If you're a MK fan, make sure you pick up the October issue of EGM and check it out.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 new details
Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:47:02 AEST
You might remember back in June we reported that Atari were at work on a sequel to the popular PS2 fighting game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. Well, they've released new details about the imaginately named sequel. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 will feature never seen before character fusions, a new single player mode, opponents new to the video game world and "Toriyama shading," a new and unique style of shading coined after the original author of the Dragon Ball series, Akira Toriyama. The game will also feature 34 of the toughest, most seasoned heroes and villains from throughout the Dragon Ball Z sagas. The World Games through the Kid Buu sagas of the Dragon Ball Z animated series are "all new" in the Budokai 2 experience. Players can battle in eight highly destructive arenas covering four gameplay modes, including Versus, Tournament, Training and the all-new, single-player experience, Dragon Mode, where players join forces with a team of AI-controlled DBZ® fighters on a quest to capture all seven Dragon Balls. Fans can perform fusions - the combination of two fighters into one, taken directly from the animated series - and play as the mighty villain Buu, who appears in three forms, Maijin Buu, Super Buu and Kid Buu.

"The Dragon Ball Z® video game franchise has achieved significant success and fan status because they invite fans to 'play the show'," said Nancy MacIntyre, vice president of marketing for Atari's Beverly studio. "Budokai(tm) 2 will once again demonstrate Atari's ongoing commitment to delivering fresh and compelling interactive entertainment."

"Atari continues to captivate fans by letting them participate in an authentically recreated, Dragon Ball Z® universe, including all of the most compelling story lines and memorable characters, said Gen Fukunaga, president of FUNimation Productions. "With surprising gameplay features and graphics enhancements, Budokai(tm) 2 looks to set a new standard of DBZ® video game excellence."
If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan, this could be a no brainer. The game is currently scheduled for a December release. Don't forget that the original Budokai game is also on it's way to the Gamecube and is due out around the same time.

Namco counts down to the US release of Soul Calibur II
Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:47:23 AEST
Namco is really pulling out all stops to market the looming US release of Soul Calibur II with less than 2 weeks to go before its official launch date of August 26th. They said they are currently in "full swing" of their million dollar marketing campaign for the most anticipated fighting title of 2003.

"The launch of SOULCALIBUR®II is truly becoming an industry event," said Robert Ennis, chief financial officer for Namco Hometek Inc. "The excitement being generated at retail for the title's release has been tremendous. Consumers can't wait to get their hands on the game."
The extent of their marketing campaign is huge. It includes broadcast, cable and syndicated television advertising; print and online advertising in enthusiast and general interest publications and websites; highly innovative pre-sell and launch promotions at retail; public relations; an entertainment industry seeding program; and heavy console-specific promotional activities, such as in-store kiosks, demo disks, event marketing and online promotions.

Trevor Goddard death wasn't suicide
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:18:03 AEST
You may remember that back in June we reported that Trevor Goddard, who was the actor who played Kano in the Mortal Kombat movie, was found dead in his home from apparent suicide from drug intoxication. Well, as it turns out, it's believed that his death was accidental, not a suicide. Yes, he had a lot of drugs in his body, including cocaine and heroine, and yes, the cause of death still is drug intoxication, but the coroner doesn't believe Goddard's death was suicide.

Another interesting tidbit is that it was revealed at Goddard's wake by his father that he wasn't Australian like he had many people believe but in fact English. Goddard had constructed a ficticious story that he grew up in Perth, Australia when he was in fact born and raised in England.

Check out News.com for the full story.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution in stores this week
Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:51:46 AEST
Sega has sent word today that Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution will be in stores this week in North America. The game was actually released in PAL territories last month, and now NTSC territories are finally receiving it. It's already received some whopping high scores in various reviews so it certainly looks like it's going to hit the mark with fans of the franchise.

The latest version of SEGA's 2002 hit "Virtua Fighter(TM) 4," "Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution" has fully optimized graphics for exceptionally detailed arenas and fluid play without "jaggies," raising the stakes in the fighting game genre. Players throw-down against two new characters added to the original cast of 13: Goh the Judoka and Brad the ferocious Muay Thai Kick Boxer. As in "Virtua Fighter 4," players can customize their characters, but this time around there are more than 1,500 new costume items - more than double the amount from last year's release.
In addition, "Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution" features a new "Quest" mode where players battle aggressive highly tuned A.I. opponents modeled after the top players from the arcades of Japan. In this mode, gamers fight for the World Championship through a series of simulated arcade tournaments. In each arcade, gamers are also given missions; once accomplished, players earn items to further customize their characters.

New Poll
Posted by White_Pointer @ 10:10:28 AEST
It's been a much debated issue of recent times to how important a storyline is to a fighting game. Some games, such as the Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat series, thrive on the story and it's one of the things that attracts people to the game. Other games like the Street Fighter and King of Fighters series don't have much of a story at all, focusing more on getting into the action without anything else to worry about. So, what do you think? Is a story important to a fighting game? Vote now!

Poll Results
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:59:03 AEST
It's time for a new poll. But first, let's look at the results of the previous poll:

Which method of blocking do you prefer?

43.7% - Pressing away, or down and away from your opponent
28.5% - Pressing a block button
11.8% - I don't care, I never block
10.2% - I don't mind, I get used to any method
5.6% - Leaving the control in a neutral position

Well, not surprisingly nearly half the voters preferred the style of blocking first introduced by the Street Fighter series of pressing away from your opponent before the attack connects. Over a quarter preferred to use a block button and a good portion didn't really care what the blocking method was.

One Must Fall: Battlegrounds limited test begins
Posted by White_Pointer @ 10:15:41 AEST
The team behind One Must Fall: Battlegrounds released their limited test just a few days ago, and it is available to download free if you are a member of the OMF message boards. Diversions are also giving you the opportunity to present feedback via their message boards as well. Even if you've played the previous work-in-progress betas, you'd want to check this out. Added to this new limited test version is a new gameplay mode called laser ball which works like a soccer game. As you approach the goal you slow down, meaning one of your team mates needs to get in front of you to pass the laser ball to them before you get smashed by your opposition. Think of it as soccer but without the "no dangerous tackling" rule. It requires quite a bit of teamwork but is also quite fun.
For more information, check out the Official OMF site. Don't forget the game is also available for preorder worldwide.

Capcom Fighting All Stars Canceled
Posted by Smurgen @ 7:50:21 AEST
Here is a Babelfish Translation of Capcom's official word on the game

Customer everyone

Usually, it grants extraordinary high distribution, gratitude says thickly.
Well, we inform about the fact that the development discontinuance is decided concerning the arcade game "CAPCOM FIGHTING ALL STARS which" this each time plans sale, with various circumstance.

There is no excuse truly in the customer who, designates sale as expectation, but that no soldier/finishing understanding it grants, we ask.

2003 August 7th corporation

Note: There was a bit of japanese untranslated text there but I have removed it since it would force you to download the japanese language pack

Smurgen Says: I guess they are saying that the game sucks so they canceled it. It looks like they were trying to say while they know it would sell..some other reason prevents them from making it. Lets hope this experience is put to better use in future games.

At the end of last month, G-Phoria was taped and it was a massive awards show held in Hollywood with celebrities, video game journalists and respected members of the industry all attending. The event was hosted by the famous comedian Jamie Kennedy. Needless to say, it as pretty big.

The award for Best Brawl was tightly contested but the winner was Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, beating out Tekken 4 for the award.

The awards ceremony will be aired on G4 TV on August 8th.

Another MK Movie in the works?
Posted by KH @ 21:21:18 AEST
While this is far from any solid information, I thought I'd mention that I've been hearing rumors about another Mortal Kombat movie that may possibly be made. Originally, I had heard that they were planning on making another movie which would focus on Mortal Kombat 4's storyline for the most part, but after Deadly Alliance's success, it seems they may be changing their path.

Whether or not this is actually true or not that another Mortal Kombat movie is even possible is yet to be confirmed. So, don't get your hopes up. I'll post more when I can actually get a reliable and solid source for this rumor.
