Yayness! New History of Fighters addition!
Posted by Pube @ 22:06:38 AEST
This week we explode into one of the early greats, The Way of The Exploding Fist, as per request from one of our forumers. Check it out here. Want me to cover one of your favourite old-time fighters? Drop me a line at my email (pube@blood-sports.net) or post a message on the forums.
Oh yeah, and I filled in a few little extra details into Gooberman's old articles, namely adding in a paragraph of info and some pics for the original International Karate game, plus a tidbit of info on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, the latter also with some pics. Follow the respective links on the main History page.

Phew.

Posted by Smurgen @ 8:51:37 AEST
Dead Or Alive Online (an enhanced, online-capable collection of both Dead of Alive and Dead or Alive 2 for the X box) may be delayed until 2004. Rumors hint at a possible inclusion of Dead or Alive 3 to the collection.

Smurgen Says: If adding Dead or Alive 3 to the set is causing the delay, then I'm all for it!

New Guilty Gear On The Way!
Posted by Smurgen @ 8:47:20 AEST
Arc System Works is currently working on a new game in the Guilty Gear series. The new title, which runs on Sammy's AtomisWave (based on Sega's Naomi hardware), will begin testing in Japanese arcades next month and make its official debut at the annual AM Show in Tokyo on September 11. The title will be first one in the series to use a magnetic-card system, similar to the one used in Virtua Fighter 4 to store character data and match statistics. The game will also be network compatible, although it's unknown whether this means you'll get to fight other players over the Internet.

Smurgen Says: Another game in the super high rez Guilty Gear series? I'm SO there!

SvC New Hidden Characters Revealed
Posted by KH @ 5:05:34 AEST
SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos's official site has revealed a bunch of hidden characters in the game.

I stand corrected on stating that there wouldn't be anymore character's added ^_^ Playmore surprised me.

They've released a few new hidden characters.

There's the MS Alien from Metal Slug Series (SNK) in the game now, as well as Zero from Megaman Series (Capcom). Also, 2 new final bosses. Red Arremer/Firebrand from Capcom is the hidden last boss you fight after defeating Shin Mr. Karate, you fight him in hell, and the original Goddess Athena from the original Athena game you fight in heaven after beating Shin Gouki. Zues is also rumored to be a final boss after athena, but from my speculation he appears to just be for storyline/ending and doesn't actually fight you.

This game is looking really good. If you haven't checked it out already, do so.

New Samurai Spirits Zero details
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:32:12 AEST
SNK Playmore have revealed some new details on Samurai Spirits Zero, the newest addition in the series known as Samurai Shodown in NTSC and PAL territories.

The basic actions are more or less intact, but the overall control scheme and game engine is quite a bit different from the previous titles in the series. For a start, the A and B buttons are used for weak and middle strength slashes, while pressing both buttons together executes a fierce slash. Pressing the C button makes your fighter kick, and pressing it along with a direction executes a guard crush throw. The D button gives the newest addition to the series and performs a variety of functions. If pressed by itself, it performs a new move called meditation. Pressed together with a Joystick direction, it executes a ground roll, short jump, or puts your fighter into a crouching position, depending on which direction is pressed. Veterans of the series will be happy to know that the anger system has been retained, but it has been further enhanced with the meditation system. When you meditate, you can convert your anger stock into spiritual stock, which will allow your character to enter enlightenment mode. If a character is in enlightenment mode, the game will run in a matrix-style slow motion, allowing you to pull off some pretty neat manuveurs. There's also a new sword power system that has been introduced into the game, and the strength of your slash attacks is proportional to the amount of sword power you have left. Each slash will deplete the bar by a little, and it slowly replenishes as time goes by. This obviously puts more skill into the game and really weans out button mashers.

Veterans will no doubt be pleased that the game will feature a lot of characters, 24 in all. Haoumaru, Nakororu, Rimururu, Ukyo, Genjuro, Juubei, Hanzou, Galford, Kyoshiro, Shizumaru, Gaira, Basara, Charlotte, Kazuki, Sougetsu, and Tamtam all make a return. The new characters are Yoshitora Tokugawa (a samurai with 4 swords), Mina Majikina (a young female archer), Yunfei (an old bearded man with a falchion), Kusare Gedou (a demonic looking guy) and Lera, Rasetsumaru, Kaja, and Suija, who are similar to rasetsu mode characters Nakoruru, Haoumaru, Kazuki, and Sougetsu respectively from the previous games in the series. Unfortunately though, this game will not have a rasetsu and shura mode. But there seems to be more than enough new additions to make up for this.

Fans of the series will definately be excited by this! There's a lot to look forward to, and there's more to come! The game is currently scheduled for a release in Japanese arcades in the Northern Hemisphere Autumn. No word yet on when or if it'll be released in North America or PAL territories just yet.

Sony's sales decrease, the GBA on top
Posted by White_Pointer @ 11:21:54 AEST
Sony has released ther Q1 2003 financial results, and they aren't looking as good as they did at the same time last year. Sony's gaming division has seen a decrease in both hardware and software sales. Combined, the two accounted for an 18.2-percent overall decrease in sales for the period between April 1 and June 30.

Nintendo however, are right on top with the Gameboy Advance. Nintendo have recently issued a press release that states that the GBA is the best selling console in North America, and by quite a considerable margin, too. They say that about 45% of all gaming consoles sold in North America last month were GBA's. The GBA has been outselling the PS2 since the start of the year, and this is shown by the fact that 6 of the top 10 selling games right now are for the GBA. GBA SP sales are expected to boost even more when the flame (red) and onyx (black) systems go on the market in September.

SvC Launched Successfully
Posted by KH @ 12:52:35 AEST
SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos launched yesterday without a hitch. All of it's arcade cabinets were sold and were in high demand. If you're lucky, your local Arcade should have gotten at least one.

The next orders are being placed now, so if your arcade doesn't have one yet, it should soon.

Playmore is happy with it's launch in the US, and that it met it's expected sales quota for the Launch day. Let's hope this keeps up for the rest of the month so they can get their name out there and get back on their feet.

If you haven't played SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos yet, go out and try it.

Samurai Shodown Zero To Begin Testing
Posted by Smurgen @ 3:48:50 AEST
Samurai Shodown Zero is set to begin testing at NeoGeo Land in Osaka from July 25-27. No screen shots yet but as soon as they are available we will have them for you.

Smurgen Says: Wow, they just announced it and already testing is set to begin. I'm guessing the game will be an "All-Stars" kind of game having various characters from the series come together in one game similar to King of Fighters 98. Don't hold me to this, The Smurgen could be wrong.

Server Upgrade
Posted by White_Pointer @ 0:17:01 AEST
Our host has informed me that Blood-Sports.net's server will be upgraded later today. I've been told that this shouldn't result in any downtime, but if you notice some strange things happening then you'll know why. The upgrade will increase the site's performance and security and will optimise little things here and there so it'll be for the best. You probably won't notice anything, I just thought I'd give everyone a heads up.

Street Fighter Dead in the water?
Posted by KH @ 3:15:11 AEST
When asked recently, a spokesperson for Capcom stated that no new Street Fighter projects were currently in the works or in the planning for the future. The earliest we'll see a new Street Fighter game won't be for another 5 long years when the 20th anniversary roles around. And by then, Capcom is considering just releasing re-hash combo packs of the old Street Fighter games.

Consider the Street Fighter series pretty much dead, unfortunately. Way to go Capcom! Build a series for over 10 years as your foundation then wipe it out completely!

Over 9 million XBox's sold
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:36:15 AEST
Microsoft have recently revealed their sales figures for the XBox, and according to them, they have sold nearly 9.5 million consoles since it's launch in late 2001. Microsoft are expecting this number to rise to somewhere between 14.5 million and 16 million before the end of the fiscal year with some high anticipated titles due to be launched in that time period. Also according to MS, XBox Live has over half a million subscribers with about million online games going on every week. If these figures are accurate, that's pretty good...although probably lower than they were expecting...largely due to the XBox's extremely poor Japanese sales.

The End of King of Fighters Online?
Posted by Smurgen @ 17:27:02 AEST
SNK Playmore just announced that they have decided to cancel their agreement with Korean game developer Unotac to produce King of Fighters Online for Windows. Unotac is still allowed to use any content already created for the game (its in beta stages now) but they have to remove any KOF related names and titles.

Smurgen Says: Huh?? Well SNK Playmore seems to be shooting themselves in the foot with this one. Remove all ties to a game that could have brought them some much needed money? Lets just hope this was for the best. Smurgen's guess is the existing characters will have to be renamed. Lets have a look at Smurgen's pick for new names!

Kyo: Jim
Iori: Sal
Leona: Amy
Athena: Julie
Kim: Steve

Sounds like fun huh? ^_^

Forum Status
Posted by KH @ 8:35:37 AEST
It may just be on my end, But, I'm getting errors of a file not being able to be opened everytime I try to view any topics in the forums. The main forum itself works and so do profiles and the like, but topic lists can't be displayed.

If no one else is getting this problem, ignore this post. If you are though, then you'll have to wait until WP gets back from his vacation as I have no server control over the forum and any admin options I do have return the same result as trying to view the topics. So unfortunately if it is indeed the forums and not just me, they may be down until he gets back.

I apologize for any inconvinience. Feel free to email me regarding any questions you may have.

UPDATE BY White_Pointer: Lucky I checked on the site while I was at an Internet cafe. It wasn't a problem with the forums, but the database. The problem is now fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience, looks like I need to have a chat to my host about our database...

SNK Vs Capcom Delayed, Capcom All Stars Canned?
Posted by KH @ 5:59:20 AEST
SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos went off as planned. Hundreds of awaiting fans crowded the Fun Zone arcade center in Los Angeles for a chance to play this new game. The machine ran on freeplay all day and each person was given a ticket. When their number was called they were allowed one match. Unfortunatley, this also forced people to play with character's they didn't pick as whoever won the battle was picked for the next match and the next playwer was forced to use them.

Later when the crowd died down again, Players got up to 3 matches each before having to get off, and no tickets were needed anymore.

EarthQuake seems to have a teleport move that pulls off without a hitch and keeps him from being cornered up due to his size. And his chain seems to help him out a lot and he has a new DM with it. His fart also seems to allow him lots of traps on his opponents.

Shiki wasn't played by too many people, but from what was said, she seems to be a really good character with a lot of nice moves and speed.

Tessa/Tabassa was another char not used that much, but she does indeed have her limits and moves involving her cat, and she has a lot of mind game tricks.

Hugo seemed to be 50/50. Some people lost big time due to his size and slowness while others found themselves demolishinig the competition with his strength and size.

Mr. Karate seemed to be a favorite and was used quite a bit. He seems to be closer to a 98 version of Takuma but with some of his old AOF moves as well. Though he's lost two of his best moves.

Chun-Li is probably one of the most suprising characters. SNK took near every move Capcom has ever given any incarnation of her and put them all into this Chun-Li along with a new move. She feels like a very well balanced char and was widely used and liked.

Sagat got a lot of complaints for feeling less than his usual self. He seems to be a bit smaller than usual and apparently weaker.

Terry plays like his normal self and not much of a change.

Choi players said Choi played pretty well and had some new moves and even faster speed than usual.

Dhalsism who had many fans skeptical due to the fact Playmore decided to make his stretch moves seem like a rubber effect, turned out to be another fan fav. Players have commented that he plays very well.

Unfortunately, SNK/Playmore has delayed the release date for SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos until July, 25th. So we'll have to wait about two more weeks. Better they fix any problems and delay than rush a crappy release so.

Also, I'm not sure on this but I've heard rumors Capcom All Stars has been canned. If anyone has any info on this, email me and the source. Thanks.

And last but not least, it is rumored Playmore might be moving from MVS to Naomi/AtmosWave (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) in the future as they were pleased with the recent ports of their kof games to the dreamcast. They're also rumored to be re-releasing KOF2k1 on dreamcast with new 3d backgrounds, similiar to 99Evo that they released.

We've recently found out from a reliable source that Rock and Hwang will not be included in the US version of Soul Calibur II. Instead, the US version will have Assassin and Berserker selectable. Why Namco have decided to make this decision is anybody's guess but there will no doubt be some disappointed fans out there at this news.

Neo SNK and SC2 Demo At EB
Posted by KH @ 9:39:20 AEST
Not too much news on the fighting game front at the moment. Just little tidbits.

Playmore formerly known as SNK, which went bankrupt and reopened later under the new name, has changed their name to SNK Playmore now since most fans seem to be calling them SNK anyway. This might be some slightly good news to any hardcore SNK fans out there.

Also, a demo of Soul Calibur 2 is playable at EB for anyone interested in trying it out before it's release.

That's about it for now.

Here's a link to playmore's official site if you want more info on their official announcement.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance sells through 2 million
Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:41:55 AEST
Midway have just published a press release stating that Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance has now sold over 2 million units since it's November 22nd 2002 release. No other fighting game in recent history can claim those sorts of sales figures.

“Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance took gamers by storm, and these numbers prove the franchise is continuing to define the fighting genre,”
said Helene Sheeler, vice president of marketing, Midway.

The press release also said that the leading gaming media have also recognized Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance as a top choice. GamePro Magazine’s 13th Annual Readers Choice Award for the best fighting game went to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, while GameSpot declared the game “Best fighting game of 2002” for Xbox and Nintendo GameCube, and IGN included it among its “Editor’s Choice Awards” for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube. In March 2003, Gaming World X crowned Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance as the “Best Fighter” on Xbox.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution - Version D?
Posted by Smurgen @ 2:47:47 AEST
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution - Version D is the next rumored upgrade of the excellent fighting game series. Expected to be included is about 10 extra moves per character and the addition of yet another playable character. Rumors of the new character are also spreading, suggesting it might be a female who fights with Akira's Hakkyokou-ken style. Keep in mind that these are just rumors. The facts will be known once Sega-AM2 makes an official announcement.

SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos Official US Launch
Posted by KH @ 12:45:16 AEST
SNK Vs Capcom: Chaos will be released on July 14th in arcades all over, but Fun Zone Arcade in California will be hosting a preview launch of it for one day on July 12th hosted by SNK Neo Geo USA, Fun Zone, and S-C.com. Attendants of the launch preview will be able to play the game earlier than the nationwide release.

The game is scheduled to be ported to Playstation 2, and possibly gamecube. The engine uses a new chip and may not even run on Neo Geo's normal MVS cart from what I've been hearing.

The game has been in beta testing for the past two months in Japan now, and Playmore has released tons of videos on their site showcasing the game. Soon we'll get to see for ourselves if it lives up to it's mass hype.

Playstation 3 games already in development?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 0:08:11 AEST
It may be hard to believe, but it was revealed at this year's E3 that a handful of developers are already starting work on titles for the successor to the PS2, titled, imaginatively, the PS3. Developers include THQ, Activision, Electronic Arts, Take-Two and Capcom, and that's only the start of it. The PS3 currently isn't due out until 2005, but already developers are starting to get in on it and perhaps get a head start on the competition. What we've also found out is that the PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS2 games, but not with PS1, and that Sony will most likely stop production of the 'PS one' once the PS3 is launched in 2005.

I-Ninja to feature animation from seasoned animators
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:10:54 AEST
In case you've never heard of it, I-Ninja is a 3D action game currently in development by Argonaut and Namco that looks to cross the boundary and combine Ninja Action with extreme sports. Not too much has been revealed about the game but what we do know is this:

  • Some of the I-Ninja's moves sound like they've been designed with both utility and comedy in mind. For instance, the "sword copter" will let you float and fly short distances--presumably, this involves spinning one or more swords overhead to act as helicopter rotor blades, giving you lift and allowing you to take off.
  • Your ninja has command of a variety of "manga-style ninja moves" with which to dispatch foes
  • You can even "'shred' on extreme rails," although one wonders how this will be accomplished without a skateboard.
  • The I-Ninja will have an assortment of ninja-oriented and conventional military weaponry available, including shuriken, chain whips, blowguns, and even rocket launchers.
  • According to Namco, the game's many missions are spread across five environments, and you'll face enemies ranging from foot soldiers to a 150-foot robot.

Namco has also signed Animated film makers Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, who are responsible for such animated films as The Secret of N.I.M.H., An American Tail, A Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Anastasia.
"It is a privilege for Namco to work with such prestigious animators as Don Bluth and Gary Goldman," said Jon Kromrey, producer at Namco Hometek, Inc. "Their filmmaking legacy has spanned decades and they are making their mark in the video game world again. We are confident they will help Namco make I-Ninja the next new character game sensation."

Street Fighter II creator leaves Capcom
Posted by White_Pointer @ 13:03:54 AEST
Yoshiki Okamoto, the brains behind some of Capcom's huge successes such as Street Fighter II and Final Fight has decided to call it a day at Capcom, leaving, he said, because of "differences" between himself and Capcom. He's now reportedly seeking to create his own company called Game Republic, although a popular magazine has the name Gamer's Republic so he may be forced to reconsider the company name because they are too similar. As a result nothing has been confirmed yet, but we'll give you the full low-down as soon as it happens.
