Saturday, May 31, 2003 Namco's plans for 2004
Posted by White_Pointer @ 17:09:54 AEST
Namco are really looking at cementing themselves into the video game market this year and are aiming to be one of the top 5 publishers in the world. They'll be increasing their European titles from 9 last year to 18 this year, and North American titles from 12 last year to 21 this year. What does this mean for fighting game fans? It means that you'll be getting more games more frequently and they won't just be restricted to Japan.
Namco have said that they plan on releasing titles in the Soul Calibur series more frequently, perhaps every 2 years rather than the current 3 years, but the good news doesn't end there for Namco fighting fans. They've also announced that they are hard at work at another title in the Tekken series, which is currently planned for a release sometime in 2004. They also have an as yet unnamed fighting title that will be a brand new franchise planned for a 2004 release.
As if Soul Calibur II wasn't enough to drool over, now we have even more Namco fighting titles to look forward to!

Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:21:15 AEST
Some of you may have noticed the site was down for an hour or so this morning (US time). This is because there was a fire in the datacentre where our server is located and as a result it was shut down for a brief period. But don't worry, it's back up and running normal again. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Wednesday, May 28, 2003 New information on MK6!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 16:11:02 AEST
MK5.org were able to ask the Midway team at E3 this year some questions on the new Mortal Kombat game with the working title of Mortal Kombat 6, and here's the information they received:
- MK6 will use an improved version of the MK:DA engine; there will not be a complete rewrite. - The next installment of Mortal Kombat will feature more platform-specific code. Each version of MK6 will use the same engine, but it will be tweaked to use the strengths of each specific console. The focus will be more on pushing each system to its limit, as opposed to trying to keep all 3 versions of the game as close to each other as possible. - The backgrounds will be much more interactive than anything we've seen yet. When asked about background items that could impale you, Ed assured, "That's only the beginning." - Multiple fatalities are an extreme definite. - An online component is confirmed, and will play a major role in the game.
In addition to this, it's also most likely that MK6 will not be the game's final name, indeed, it will more than likely have a subtitle like Deadly Alliance rather than the number 6.
This will definately be the game to look out for! No release date has been set yet but we probably aren't likely to see it before late 2004 at the very best.

Sunday, May 25, 2003 Capcom celebrates 15 years of Street Fighter
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:09:08 AEST
Believe it or not, the Street Fighter franchise is 15 years old this year, and to commemorate this fact, Capcom have opened up an official 15th anniversary site which you can take a look at here. Capcom will be using the site to sell Street Fighter related items and to announce events they will be holding to celebrate the 15 years of the series. So far, Capcom will be holding three events. The first will be a competition where it'll be inviting it's fans to recreate a background music track from the original Street Fighter II, and the winner will have their track released on Capcom's tribute CD Street Fighter vs. Street Musician. The second contest invites fans to dress up as their favourite Street Fighter character and send their photos in, and the winners will have the photos displayed on the official site until the end of the year. The last contest is an art competition, where the winners will have their work displayed in a mobile art gallery that will be travelling around Japan.

New Poll
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:30:06 AEST
With the close of the previous poll, time to start a new one.
The art of defense in a fighting game has long been a much debated issue. What's the best method of blocking attacks? Everyone has their own opinions. Seasoned players of Street Fighter and most of the old 2D fighters would no doubt prefer the away or down-away style of blocking attacks. Mortal Kombat was an exception to the rule back then and used a block button, and nowadays many of the new fighters employ the use of a block button as well. In addition to this, a new method of blocking has begun to emerge where you simply stand still with the control in a neutral position and you'll automatically block attacks.
So, which method of blocking do you prefer? Do you prefer any particular method, do you get used to whatever method the game uses and just go with the flow, or is it irrelevant to you because you simply don't block at all? Vote in the poll and let us know!

Poll Results
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:21:46 AEST
Time to look at the results of the most recent poll:
Which games would you like Blood-Sports.net to cover?
40.5% - One Must Fall series 15.3% - Virtua Fighter series 11.4% - Bloody Roar series 9.8% - King of Fighters series 8.6% - Samurai Showdown series 7% - Guilty Gear series 4.7% - Tenchu series 2.3% - Powerstone series
An interesting result there, with the One Must Fall series topping the list in the end by quite a long way, followed by the Virtua Fighter and Bloody Roar series.
As promised, we'll be adding the top few games into our lineup, so in the coming weeks you'll be seeing One Must Fall, Virtua Fighter and Bloody Roar all added to the Blood-Sports.net game lineup!

Namco withdraws its merger proposal
Posted by White_Pointer @ 17:00:17 AEST
We know by now that Namco gave Sega a May 9th deadline to decide on whether they want to take up their merger proposal. Sega haven't responded, even after the negotiations with Sammy fell through, so Namco has withdrawn it's offer and stated that they will no longer pursue a merger with Sega. However, Namco representatives said that if Sega were to make a new offer or proposal to the company, they would take the time to consider it, leaving the door open for a possible merger somewhere down the road.

Friday, May 9, 2003 Sequel to Street Fighter 2 on its way?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 23:27:52 AEST
No, I'm not talking about Street Fighter 3 either. Dorimaga reported that Capcom is planning to develop a sequel to Street Fighter 2, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series. Capcom mentioned that they had decided to make a sequel to Street Fighter 2 instead of Street Fighter 3 because they would like to use the more realistic graphics of SF2 (well, as real as anime can get, I suppose), instead of the more cartoony graphics in SF3. Be sure to check back here for regular updates on this game as the news becomes available.

InterServ International, a Taiwan based developer has recently announced their development of Meteor Blade, a new weapon-based 3D fighter currently in the works for the PC and XBox that will support up to 16 players online! Oooh yeah! It's about time something like this is being done, it'll surely be a great achievement if they can pull it off. The action will take place in large, destructible environments that give players plenty of room to perform their moves and finishers and make use of any weapon upgrades they find. Sounds great! Nothing else has been revealed as yet, expect us to have more coverage on this game as the information becomes available.

Sega no longer merging with Sammy?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:42:50 AEST
We reported not too long ago that Sega had decided to not merge with Namco, but instead merge with the pinball machine maker Sammy. However, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, both Sega and Sammy failed to agree on a few details of the deal, and so for the time being at least, the merger isn't going to happen. Namco had given Sega until May 9th, which is tomorrow, to make a decision about it's own merger proposal, does this mean Sega may merge with Namco after all? Stay tuned.
Dead or Alive Online announced!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:19:18 AEST
Tecmo have recently revealed in the Japanese Famitsu Magazine that they are working on Dead or Alive Online for the XBox, which will be a compilation of the original Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2. The graphics of the original however will not be changed from the Saturn version, however Dead or Alive 2's graphics will use the XBox's full power. Both will be playable online, making use of the XBox Live capabilities. Apparently this new compilation will actually be playable at E3, so if it is, expect us to have more coverage on it as it unfolds! (by the way, there's only about a week to go before E3!)

Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:39:48 AEST
With E3 drawing ever closer (less than 2 weeks away now) most of the companies have stepped forward and revealed official lists of the games they will have on display. Here's a list of the fighters that'll be on show:
"True" Fighters Onimusha Buraiden - Capcom (PS2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Konami (GC, PS2) Soul Calibur II - Namco (GC, PS2, XBox) Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution - Sega (PS2) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Ubisoft (PS2) One Must Fall: Battlegrounds - Diversions Entertainment (PC)
Other Games that would be classified as Fighters: Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance - Acclaim (GC, PS2, XBox) Vultures - CDV Entertainment Altered Beast - Sega (PS2) WWE Raw 2 - THQ (XBox) WWE Wrestlemania XIX - THQ (GC)
There's also other games in addition to these that the companies have not revealed anything about except the name, so we may see more fighters come E3 time, but even if we don't, that's an impressive list to be looking forward to this year!
Why not discuss these future games and any others you may want to talk about in our forums? I've posted the FULL list of games to be shown at E3, so click the above link to see every one of them!

Namco/Sega merger is a no go
Posted by White_Pointer @ 7:33:09 AEST
Sega have announced that they will not be taking up Namco's merger offer, but rather will be merging with pinball machine maker Sammy. Pity, a Namco/Sega partnership might have been good, but alas, we won't be seeing it now. Sega President Hideki Sato said earlier this week the company should be able to finish its audit of Sammy's financial records ahead of the May 9 deadline set by Namco. Sega is expected to announce the merger once the audit of Sammy's assets is finished.

Capcom's E3 lineup
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:49:52 AEST
Well, Capcom have finally made their E3 lineup public. You might remember a week and a half ago it was reported that Capcom may be showing off Capcom Fighting All Stars, but alas, the game does not appear on the list they have provided. Here's the full list:
Bombastic (PS2) Chaos Legion (PS2) Dino Crisis 3 (Xbox) Disney's Aladdin (GBA) Disney's Magic Quest 2 Starring Mickey and Minnie (GBA) Gotcha Force (GC) Group S Challenge (Xbox) Maximo vs. Army of Zin (PS2) Mega Man Battle Network Blue (GBA) Mega Man Battle Network White (GBA) Mega Man Network Transmission (GC) Mega Man X7 (PS2) Mega Man Zero 2 (GBA) Onimusha 3 (PS2) Onimusha Blade Warriors (PS2) Onimusha Tactics (GBA) P.N. 03 (GC) Pro Cast Sports Fishing (Xbox) Resident Evil Code Veronica X (GC) Resident Evil Dead Aim (PS2) Resident Evil Outbreak (working title) (PS2) Steel Battalion Online (working title) (Xbox) Viewtiful Joe (GC)
Good for Onimusha, Resident Evil and Mega Man fans...not so good for fans that were hanging out to see Capcom's new fighter. Could it have been one of the 18 projects Capcom canned earlier in the year?

Friday, May 2, 2003 Namco gives Sega deadline for merger
Posted by White_Pointer @ 15:59:49 AEST
Namco have revealed that they have sent a notice to Sega, giving them until May 9th to decide on whether they will want to merge. Namco says that it has already been half a month since they originally gave Sega the proposal, and they need to get this clarified quickly for the sake of both companies so they can continue their regular business. Sega was hoping to make a decision about its merger with Sammy early this month after analysing Sammy's assets. Looks like they'll need to speed up that process if they want to seriously consider Namco's proposal.
We'll have more on this as it develops, so keep checking back for updates.

Thursday, May 1, 2003 Stake: Fortune Fighters now available!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 10:48:33 AEST
Metro3D, Inc., announced today the nationwide release of Stake: Fortune Fighters, its premier title made exclusively for the Microsoft Xbox game system. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this new fighter, here's a description from Metro3D's press release:
Stake: Fortune Fighters is the ultimate third-person combat event where the wildest, most engaging, and dangerous of competitors reap a ton of cash every two years. It’s Stake time again and everyone is ready for this year’s match-up for which Stake competitors will receive riches and fame and command the respect of all who dare defeat him or her. With three main modes of play, single-player, one-to-four player Death Match and Team Death Match, the competition heats up as players fight for the ultimate honor.
Stake: Fortune Fighters players compete in single or multiplayer split-screen arena combat as one of eight awesome characters that come from all different parts of the world, each trying to win the coveted Stake tournament and bring fame to his or her homeland. These characters include: Yen Fan of the Great Crocodile Isle, and Yen Yen of the Ancient Buddha Passage; Void the Monk, a fighter whose Dragon Statue protects the world from evil winds; Barty Beart, head of the Merry Moon Circus who is touted for her tricky fiery magic and traps; Habba Kenji, a samurai warrior of the Water Garden; Pharo the Dancing Lance, a great spear warrior who must restore glory to the Ruins of Cursed Hand Temple with her command of the battle spear; Baron Hans, a knight with the power of the sword; and finally, Anglesite Obsidia, an ice giant of a forgotten race fighting for the survival of his people.
All eight characters are powered with tons of different attacks, defenses, magic powers, speed and special “anger” power levels, exclusive to each character. Players can also attack with interactive items including grenades, ice, gasses, hot oil, flaming statues, rocks, and more. Great Xbox-specific textures and effects, including 5,000 polygons per character, realistic real-time lighting and shadows, vertex and pixel shaders also enhance the game’s look. The game is now available in the US, so if you own an X-Box, it'll be well worth at least a rent. Expect us to have more coverage on this game soon!
