Site Update: More Capcom Fighting All Stars images
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:06:29 AEST
With the announcement that Capcom Fighting All Stars may still be going ahead, I've updated the image gallery. Not too much new stuff to see, but you can see Ryu laying the smack down. These shots were taken from an arcade machine however...so they may appear a little blurry but I've done the best I can to get the images as crisp as possible.
The Magic Box also has a bunch of their own screen shots, if you're interested, check them out.

Capcom Fighting All Stars still going on?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 17:33:00 AEST
A bit late with this news, but better late than never :)

You might remember we reported a little while ago that Capcom had cancelled Capcom Fighting All Stars in a surprise move. However, it seems that it actually hasn't been canned, and development is still going ahead despite the announcement. Although this hasn't been 100% confirmed, the news has certainly come from a reliable source.

There's also rumours that because the arcade board that the game is being developed for is very similar to the PS2's hardare, the game may also make an appearance on the PS2...but take that as a grain of salt for now.

GBA SP rising high in Japan and launched in Europe
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:54:39 AEST
The GBA SP is above and beyond all the other consoles as far as sales are concerned in Japan, and these hardware sales stats courtesy of GC Advanced prove it:

Game Boy Advance SP: 101,500 (Annual: 454,100)
PlayStation 2: 56,700 (Annual: 878,600)
Game Boy Advance: 20,900 (Annual: 750,300)
GameCube: 9,400 (Annual: 197,000)
PSOne: 1,400 (Annual: 30,100)
Xbox: 1,200 (Annual: 46,100)
Wonder Swan Crystal: 700 (Annual: 16,200)
Game Boy Color: 380 (Annual: 9,100)
Wonder Swan Color: 370 (Annual: 9,600)

There you go, it's there in black and white...the GBA SP selling almost twice as many units as the PS2. Of course, we need to look at these stats again in a few months time to make sure the trend continues, but the early signs are definately looking good for Nintendo - 100,000 + units sold in a week is pretty impressive. Of particular concern though is Microsoft's X-Box's position on that list...doesn't seem to be selling too well over there.

In other GBA SP related news, Nintendo's new handheld unit was also launched in Europe overnight in London! Europeans, the wait is over, and it'll be interesting to see the sales figures in a few weeks time.

More SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos characters revealed
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:09:33 AEST
According to the latest issue of Arcadia magazine, Playmore have revealed another 2 characters to add to the characters already announced for the new upcoming fighting title SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos. In addition to the 6 already announced (Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Kyo, Iori, and Mai), two new characters, Hugo from the Street Fighter 3 series and Earthquake from the Samurai Shodown series, have been confirmed to be in the game. Nothing much else has been revealed yet about the game, not even some images or screenshots so we can start salivating! The only thing that has been revealed is that it will not be based around the tournament-like structure that the recently released Capcom vs SNK 2 was.
We'll have more info on this game as it becomes available.

Even more Soul Calibur II info!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 16:23:57 AEST
We have some more news for you on Soul Calibur II's home conversions. Yes, it has been confirmed that it has been released in Japan, although the August release date in the US has not changed.
There's quite a bit of info to take on board so instead of me rambling on about it, just go here and read it yourself!
This game looks brilliant at the moment, I can't wait until I can finally play it!

More Soul Calibur II info
Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:57:33 AEST
Well, Thursday was the date set by Namco to release Soul Calibur II in Japan on all three consoles (not due in the US Until late August), and while we are still waiting for confirmation that it was indeed released on Thursday, we have some extra information on the game:

  • Link, who is featured in the GameCube version of the game, has a wide variety of attacks tied to some of the skills used in many of The Legend of Zelda games, including the downward thrust as well as bomb, arrow, and boomerang attacks.
  • Heihachi, who is found in the PlayStation 2 version of Soul Calibur, plays much like he does in Tekken, and surprisingly that particular fighting style seems to have translated over quite well to the Soul Calibur universe. Many of Heihachi's combos that he had in the Tekken games are present in Soul Calibur II.
  • The Xbox version of Soul Calibur II features the comic book character Spawn, who has his own array of impressive attacks such as a fireball and a maneuver that enables him to float in the air for a few seconds. He also has a particularly cool move in which he throws his axe into the air, only to slice his enemy while catching it on the way down.
  • A new character found in all three versions of the game, Necrid, appears to be taking the place of the Edge Master character with his ability to use various moves from most of the characters in the game, though it's worth noting that he appears to have some of his own unique moves as well.
We'll hopefully have more information on the game in the next few days.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 for X-Box released!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 15:43:20 AEST
That's right, Capcom fans with X-Boxes have another reason to rejoice! Marvel vs Capcom 2 was released yesterday in the USA! Unlike Capcom vs SNK2 EO, this isn't X-Box Live compatible, but it's still a great 2D fighter that's bound to be extremely popular!

The title features three-on-three tag team battles with over 50 characters from the Marvel and Capcom universe. 24 of them appear initially, while the others must be unlocked as players advance through the game. A whole series of combo attacks are at gamers fingertips, including the Team hyper Combo, which will result in all three characters performing Super Combos right after one another!

X-Box owners, get out there and get it now!

New Law for Violent Video games?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:14:59 AEST
Looks like those ESRB ratings will stop being voluntary and start being compulsory according to a new legislation. If this new law is passed, it will mean that violent games can not be sold or rented to minors or the companies doing so will face at least a $500 fine. Keep in mind that minors are considered under 18 generally, although in some places it can be under 21, which makes this law a little absurd if you ask me.

The full story can be read at Gamespot

Gamecube outsells PS2 in the UK
Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:30:57 AEST
Well, we reported a couple of weeks ago that the Gamecube sales were rising, and indeed they have been, especially in the UK. In fact, they have been selling so well in the last week or so in the UK (probably largely due to the release of the PAL version of Metroid Prime) that Gamecube sales have surpassed PS2 sales! This is no easy feat considering the stranglehold Sony have on the industry at the moment, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep up the trend.

Official UK game sales shart
Posted by White_Pointer @ 6:16:53 AEST
Well, we saw last time how the fighting games were doing in the UK, once they were released several months after the US got them. The UK has now finally received some of the bigger games to hit the US late last year, so let's see how they are selling.

Rank This Week / Rank Last Week / Title / Publisher / Platforms
1 / * / Metroid Prime / Nintendo / GC
2 / 2 / The Sims / EA / PS2, PC
3 / 10 / Rayman 3 / Ubi Soft / PS2, GBA, GC, XB
4 / 4 / The Getaway / SCEE / PS2
5 / 5 / GTA: Vice City / Rockstar / PS2
6 / 3 / Lord of the Rings: Two Towers / EA / XB, GC, PS2, GBA
7 / 1 / Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven / Activision / PS2
8 / 6 / FIFA 2003 / EA / PS2, XB, PS, GC
9 / 7 / Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance / Midway / PS2, XB, GC, GBA
10/ 12 / Command & Conquer: Generals / EA / PC
11 / 11 / Dancing Stage: Party Edition / Konami / PS
12 / 8 / Super Monkey Ball 2 / Infogrames / GC
13/ 13 / Splinter Cell / Ubi Soft / PC, XB
14 / 14 / Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone / EA / PS, PC, GBA
15 / * / Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield / Ubi Soft / PC
16/ 15 / Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex / Vivendi / PS2, GC, XB
17 / * / Super Mario Sunshine / Nintendo / GC
18 / * / Ghost Recon / Ubi Soft / XB, PS2, PC
19/ * / Shenmue II / Microsoft / XB
20 / 19 / Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets / EA / PS2, PS, GBA, PC

Well, I guess it's no surprise to see Metroid Prime shooting straight to number 1, having won Gamespot game of the year and all. However, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, a PS2 Ninja Adventure/Fighter, is in a solid 7th place, and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is still in the top 10 in 9th place.

GBA SP sales skyrocket
Posted by White_Pointer @ 6:55:37 AEST
Since it's February release in Japan, the new Gameboy Advance SP has been selling like hotcakes. In fact, it's selling so well and so fast, that it's completely outselling the PS2! Already Nintendo have sold more than 365,000 units (compared to the PS2's 287,000) and they say they are planning on shipping out 2 million more.

"We understand demand for the SP model is high in Japan, but we also need to get ready for the overseas launch," a Nintendo spokesman said.
The system is due for release in the US on March 23rd (which was yesterday in Australia - today in most of the USA) and Europe about a week later on March 28th.

New Forums Structure
Posted by White_Pointer @ 20:36:09 AEST
You may have noticed I've done some maintenance of the forums and restructured them into what I think is a better layout. No longer are there game specific forums, now there is a couple of non-game specific forums that let you talk about specific games, depending on the topics, of course. I've also added an RPG forum, as I know plenty of you people out there enjoy the odd online forum RPG, so, I've catered for your needs as well.

Enjoy! If you haven't seen out forums yet or would like to join, you can find them here, or by clicking the links above!

Title of new Capcom vs SNK game announced!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:53:05 AEST
The upcoming Capcom vs SNK NeoGeo fighting game has just been announced on Playmore's site! It will be titled Capcom vs SNK: SVC Chaos. What exactly the SVC stands for at the moment is anybody's guess though (and if anyone has any ideas and some reliable sources, we'd love to hear from you!) and nothing else is really known about the game, however they did post a promotional pic along with the announcement showing Kyo, Iori, Mai, Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li, which you can see yourself by following the "Street Fighter" image gallery link on the left or simply by clicking here

The Game is scheduled for a release during the American summer. We'll have more info on this game as it becomes available.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is coming!

February Video Game Sales
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:20:04 AEST
Let's take a look at the best selling games in the US during the month of February:

January / February / Title / Platform / Publisher / Average Price
2 / 1 / The Getaway / PS2 / SCEA / $40
3 / 2 / GTA: Vice City / PS2 / Rockstar / $50
1 / 3 / The Sims / PS2 / EA / $50
* / 4 / Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists / PS2 / Konami / $50
4 / 5 / Devil May Cry 2 / PS2 / Capcom / $50
* / 6 / Xenosaga Episode I / PS2 / Namco / $50
* / 7 / Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice / GBA / Konami / $30
* / 8 / .hack: Infection / PS2 / Bandai / $49
8 / 9 / ATV Offroad Fury 2 / PS2 / SCEA / $40
6 / 10 / Dragon Ball Z: Budokai / PS2 / Infogrames / $48

Well, unfortunately Fighting games are not well represented this time around, with the Dragon Ball Z game the only fighter to make it onto the list in 10th place. What's interesting though is that 9 of the top 10 games are PS2 games. Could this be indicating something?

Gamecube sales rise in February
Posted by White_Pointer @ 5:10:50 AEST
Sales of the Nintendo GameCube more than doubled in February (vs. January), due in large part to the success of Nintendo's special bundle offer. Nintendo GameCube sales skyrocketed 110 percent and the software tie-ratio reached 8.4-to-1 on a year-to-date basis. Game Boy(R) Advance sold more than one-quarter of a million systems last month and was responsible for one out of every four game system purchases overall. Combining Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo claims 37 percent of all industry hardware sales and more than one-quarter of all game sales.

It seems that Nintendo are far from giving up the fight on this one! It's good to see they aren't being intimidated by Microsoft and Sony and are actually out performing them! 37% is a big market share, and it goes to show you that gamers still want dedicated games systems.

Gamecaster to stage Video Game tournament!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:20:16 AEST
Gamecaster are staging a massive Video Game tournament, to be held in Las Vegas later this year. The competition will consist of game playing obviously, and will even be broadcasted on domestic television with hundreds of spectators at the venue! This is proving to look like a big event. There will be three main prizes awarded for the winner of the different genres of games. The actual games have not been announced yet though, so we don't even know if Fighting Games are going to make the cut as one of the genres. It still sounds exciting though! It's worth mentioning that this is very much an International tournament, not just open to residents of the USA.

Even though no specific details have been given as yet, you can still pre-register for the tournament on this page if you are interested in participating, because they are expecting hundreds if not thousands of entries!

Characters from Soul Calibur... I?
Posted by BobXFett @ 9:13:58 AEST
Some news is out on the home versions of Soul Calibur II. In addition to the console-specific characters (Link on Gamecube, Spawn on Xbox and some Tekken guy on PS2), a pair of characters from the original game will be returning (characters lacking from the arcade version).

Seung Mina and Sophitia are officially included in the character rosters for the three home versions of the game.

Check out this page for some screenshots (caution: if you're on 56K, this will take you a while to load).

The page is in Japanese, so just bother with the pretty pictures ;)

Thanks to Planet Gamecube for the heads up.

Want a new colour for your X-Box controller? Then choose!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:59:02 AEST
Recognizing that color allows people to express their individuality, Microsoft is listening to gamers who wanted color options for their Xbox TM controller. The company is even taking it one step further by putting the choice of colors squarely in the gamers' hands. In an exciting new twist to the Xbox experience, gamers can log onto http://www.xbox.com/ beginning today to help decide the colors of a special line of Xbox controllers.

Xbox is offering gamers a vivid palette of choices, including red, orange, green, blue and clear. The new color controllers will retain the physical characteristics of the highly popular and ergonomic Xbox Controller S.

The votes will be tallied on March 31, and the winning colors will be unveiled at the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) May 14 in Los Angeles. The new color controllers will appear on retail shelves this October in North America.

The current list of games that support Xbox Live in Europe includes MechAssault, Unreal Championship, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Whacked!, NFL Fever 2003, and Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO, so get out there and smash those Americans to show which country really is the Capcom vs SNK 2 EO master!

That's right, we're back and ready to rock and roll on a brand new server! This means better uptimes, and faster speeds! As far as I can tell we are all back up and running as per usual, except for the emulators section which is being given the heave-ho and taken out. Going by the site statistics, it didn't seem the section was too popular and was just taking up space.

Other than that, enjoy the fruits of our brand new host!

Server move update
Posted by White_Pointer @ 15:32:20 AEST
Yes, we're still alive here, and sorry for the lack of news updates for those of you who visit for the news. I didn't want to post much news because any I post once the server move starts will no doubt be lost.
On the subject of the server move...so far at least, it's going okay. The site itself is being transferred onto the new server right as I'm typing this, and the guy that runs the new host seems to be very good...unlike our current hosts, who I'm still trying to get to refund my money and cancel the account... *sigh* Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know, it shouldn't be too much longer before you'll see us on our new host...so, patience is a virtue. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause any regular site visitors, but a minor disruption now is better than the constant disruptions the site is currently getting.

Posted by White_Pointer @ 14:10:06 AEST
No, we aren't on the new host yet, because our current host is really screwing us around, which is seriously..."annoying" us (there's little kids reading, gotta be careful!). When it's time for us to move, the site will probably go down for a day or two, and then probably won't be fully functional for a couple of days after that as I reconfigure all the backend scripts to work on the new host. But bare with us everyone, we'll have the site back up and running better than ever in no time!

We're changing hosts!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:33:22 AEST
Yep, we've had enough of our current host and so we are moving onto a new host. This will mean better speeds, better reliability and most importantly, better uptimes because there will be no bandwidth throttler imposed on us. During the next few days you may experience some site downtime, and if we are really unlucky we may also need to change our URL and domain name, but hopefully we can tell you this information before the current host pulls the plug. But, we're not about to let the site die, so stay tuned and you'll see Blood-Sports back up and better in no time!

There's a new robot hand to hand combat game on the horizon, due for release in Q2 2003. "Building on the success of its predecessor, One Must Fall: Battlegrounds will take gamers to a new level of robot-style fighting, incorporating a number of innovative and diverse gameplay aspects. The engine design and interchangeability between the pilots and the robots are first rate, and the future mod capabilities make this title an all-around incredible fighting system."

ATI signs deal with Nintendo
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:49:39 AEST
Well, everyone with a Gamecube (and probably most that don't) would know that ATI and Nintendo were working together to create the Gamecube's hardware...where ATI provided the system's graphics hardware. It's just been announced that ATI and Nintendo will be continuing their partnership. Nothing other than this has been said yet, but it's probably likely that ATI will again be providing the graphics hardware for Nintendo's next console.

"ATI has had an excellent relationship with Nintendo for many years, we are pleased to enter into this major technology development agreement with Nintendo."
said David Orton, president and COO at ATI Technologies.

Official UK Game Sales Chart
Posted by White_Pointer @ 6:43:58 AEST
Well, I mentioned after the last chart that it would be interesting to see the next sales chart from the UK after MK:DA's PAL release, so let's take a look at it shall we?

Rank This Week / Rank Last Week / Title / Publisher / Platforms
1 / 1 / The Sims / EA / PS2, PC
2 / 2 / Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance / Midway / PS2, Xbox, GC, GBA
3 / 4 / The Getaway / SCEE / PS2
4 / 5 / Grand Theft Auto: Vice City / Rockstar / PS2
5 / 3 / Command & Conquer: Generals / EA / PC
6 / * / Splinter Cell / Ubi Soft / PC, Xbox
7 / 6 / FIFA 2003 / EA / PS2, Xbox, PS, GC
8 / 11 / Dancing Stage: Party Edition / Konami / PS
9 / 9 / Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone / EA / PS, PC, GBA, GBC
10 / 7 / Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex / Vivendi / PS2, Xbox, GC
11 / 10 / Max Payne / Rockstar / PS2, PC, Xbox
12 / 8 / The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers / EA / PS2, GBA
13 / 12 / Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets / EA / PS, GBA, PS2, PC
14 / * / Tiger Woods PGA Tour / EA / PS2, Xbox, PC, GC
15 / 13 / James Bond 007: NightFire / EA / PS2, Xbox, GC, PC
16 / 18 / Treasure Planet / SCEE and Ubi Soft / PS, PS2, GBA
17 / 15 / The Sims: Unleashed / EA / PC
18 / * / Theme Park World / Dice & dEA / PC, PS2, PS
19 / 14 / Dancing Stage: Euromix / Konami / PS
20 / * / Gran Turismo 3 / SCEE / PS2

Well, the evidence speaks for itself. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, after breaking sales records in the US, is already doing very well in the UK, landing itself in a solid second place. If those sales figures are anything to go by, it's also doing well in the other PAL territories as well.

Unfortunately, no other fighting games have made it onto the UK top 20 this time around.

Dolby Launches Program to Bring Dolby Digital to PC Games
Posted by White_Pointer @ 18:37:10 AEST
Dolby Laboratories has formed a new PC game developer program to help developers incorporate high-quality Dolby(R) Digital 5.1 audio in their PC games. Building on the tremendous success of Dolby's program for console game developers, the new program for PC game developers will provide the same level of support and service that console game developers have come to expect from Dolby Laboratories, the audio leader in surround sound for games. The new program includes training on Dolby audio development tools, quality assurance, and worldwide technical support.

The development of PC games that use Dolby technology, combined with the embedded Dolby audio technologies available in today's made-for-PC home theater systems, offers PC gamers the ultimate gaming experience. Nintendo blitzes the 2003 Interactive Achievement Awards
Posted by White_Pointer @ 12:23:46 AEST
At the recent 2003 Interactive Achievement Awards held at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nintendo picked up a whole swag of awards. This isn't some cheesy little fansite run competition either, the gala ceremony, held by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS), is attended by the industry's elite and is the one annual event where creators are recognized for their works of art and voted on by their peers. It's board of directors consist of representatives from Activision, Bioware Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Ensemble Studios, Infogrames, Insomniac Games, the Interactive Digital Software Association, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Oddworld Inhabitants, Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sierra Entertainment, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Nintendo weren't awarded for any fighting games, but it's worth mentioning just what they picked up on the night. The list is as follows:

  • Animal Crossing™ for the Nintendo GameCube™, earned three awards, including: 'Innovation in Console Gaming;' 'Console RPG Game of the Year;' and 'Outstanding Achievement in Game Design.'
  • AIAS honored Metroid® Prime, also for Nintendo GameCube, in the 'First Person Action Game of the Year' category.
  • Mario Party® 4 a hysterical multi-player game, won 'Family Game of the Year,'
  • Eternal Darkness™: Sanity's Requiem, the first true psychological thriller, received the 'Outstanding Achievement in Character or Story' award.
  • In the portable category, Metroid Fusion blasted its way to 'Handheld Game of the Year.'

Nintendo made sure that the 3rd party developers of those games that won awards were recognised for their achievments, namely Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem) and Retro Studios (Metroid Prime).

The world renown video game master and senior managing director for all Nintendo software, Shigeru Miyamoto, said this:

"As an artist, the only way I know how to make a great game is to go by my intuition and heart, To win over and over in just one evening stunned our whole team. We're overwhelmed."
