KOF: Maximum Impact announced
Posted by White_Pointer @ 17:09:28 AEST
SNK/Playmore have opened up an official teaser site (it's in Japanese) for a new title in the KOF series, King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. Not much else is known about the game at this point, but it's speculated that this is probably the new title for the 3D KOF game that was announced late last year. We'll have more info on this as it becomes available.

New MK: Deception trailer
Posted by White_Pointer @ 9:24:59 AEST
We have a new MK: Deception trailer to go along with the official announcement made by Midway. This one is slightly different to the Gamespot trailer we put up yesterday. It's smaller in resolution but shows a few different scenes, plus is uncensored and shows the full stage fatality at the end of the clip! Head over to our Mortal Kombat movies page to grab yourself a copy. This one is smaller in file size so it should be a little friendlier to those of you on dialup.

On a related note, Midway have put up the official MK: Deception website, although at this point it isn't much more than a flash animation of lightning and thunder and allowing you to download the game trailer we have right here.

Mortal Kombat: Deception officially announced by Midway
Posted by White_Pointer @ 7:43:35 AEST
Following the release of the Mortal Kombat: Deception trailer (which you can download from our Mortal Kombat movies page), Midway have put out an official press release confirming the game is well under development and due sometime in the autumn/fall in the US. The press release doesn't reveal too much that we don't already know, but it's nice to see the official word from Midway. From the press release:

“Mortal Kombat: Deception promises to take this revolutionary fighting franchise to an new level”, said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. “With a host of new features including multiple fatalities per character, multi-tiered interactive backgrounds and extensive new game modes, Mortal Kombat: Deception will set a precedent for all other fighting games to follow.”
Perhaps the most notable news is that the press release only announces the game for the PS2 and XBox, indicating that at least at this point, the game isn't likely to be released on the Gamecube. To read the press release yourself just go to Midway's site.

Mortal Kombat: Deception officially revealed!
Posted by White_Pointer @ 7:36:35 AEST
It's now been made official, the next installment of the MK series will be titled Mortal Kombat: Deception, and Midway have released a video trailer to go along with it!

We knew Baraka was returning, and by the look of things if the trailer is anything to go by, it seems Baraka will actually be playing an integral part of the story. He's not the only returning character either. The trailer also reveals Mileena is making a return, as are the classics Scorpion and Sub-Zero. These seem to be the only characters the trailer firmly reveals. There's a glimpse of what could be Quan Chi but you really can't tell. There's also a brief glimpse of someone all clad in red, which could possibly be Ermac, although we are more inclined to think that it's Baraka in his second costume or possibly a new look Kenshi.

As Midway promised, the battlegrounds are more interactive than MK: DA. They will be multi-tiered, characters will be able to be smashed through walls, and the arenas will have interactive elements and hazards like spikes coming out of walls. And everyone who was disappointed that no stage fatalities made it into MK: DA, be disappointed no more, because the stage fatalities are back in MK: Deception.

The actual gameplay looks fairly similar to MK: DA. It seems each character will have a combination of both hand-to-hand and weapons based fighting styles. Other than that not much more is known.

Add to this the fact that online play has been confirmed as a definite, as well as a promised release of sometime late this year, it's definately looking good for Mortal Kombat fans.

It's not all good news however, at least if you have been supporting Nintendo in this next-generation console battle. Online play has only been confirmed for the XBox and PS2 versions...the Gamecube, not surprisingly, will almost definately NOT support online play. In fact, at this point, it isn't clear if the game is coming to the GC at all. Let's hope Midway does bring it to the GC, or there will be a lot of disappointed MK fans out there.

Back to the good news though...don't take our word for it about the trailer, we have it right here for you to download to see it for yourself! Just visit our Mortal Kombat movies page to check it out! It's a fairly large download (15.6 megs) so 56k users, be wary. After watching it, why not discuss it in our forums?

Studio Gigante working on a WWE game?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 13:12:37 AEST
On with the news, as always.

Studio Gigante, the guys behind Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus, seem to be working on a new game, but it's not a conventional fighter. Apparently they are working on the next installment of the WWE series. However, neither THQ nor Studio Gigante could be contacted to confirm or deny this.

While this might please fans of wrestling games, fans of real fighters will no doubt be disappointed at this news.

SNK/Playmore stops producing for NeoGeo and moves onto Atomiswave
Posted by White_Pointer @ 16:30:20 AEST
SNK/Playmore have officially announced that the current KOF title still in development will be renamed The King of Fighters NEOWAVE, and will be the final title the company will be producing for the NeoGeo arcade platform.

The Japanese developer will now be producing all future arcade titles on Sammy's Atomiswave, and already have announced three titles to be released on the arcade hardware this year, two of them being fighting games: The King of Fighters 2004 and Samurai Spirits AW. The announcements were made by SNK/Playmore's chief of development Kazuya Hirata.

“The NeoGeo's games have been played worldwide, but it ran on a 16-bit board that had reached its limits. Producing under a better environment should make the development easier and allow leeway for a higher-quality [game],” commented Youichi Watanabe, chief of Sammy's marketing division. “Within Japan, the AWNET should be able to attract a base of fans in ways that weren't possible with the NeoGeo. In global terms, we should be able to make stable title releases in Asia, Central America, and South America.”
“As you may know, we've made 10 installments in the King of Fighters series. This will be the 11th sequel,” said Kazuya. “To be honest, this game [series] has been pretty hard to create. We've been adding variations to it, remaking the system each and every time. We've completely remade it when it went into a new chapter in the last game, [KOF] 2003. We're currently in the middle of porting the [game's] system since we're moving to the Atomiswave. We're going to start planning out [for KOF2004], but there's been a lot of ideas that we couldn't do on the NeoGeo, so hopefully we can realize them on the Atomiswave. Graphics and sounds will obviously get better, but we also want to strengthen the gameplay itself. We will be adding new characters this time as well.”
“Samurai [Spirits] is a game where the characters really stand out. It has a different aspect from the King [of Fighters]. Samurai [Spirits] Zero Special is coming out around April, and we're hoping that it will showcase the last of the NeoGeo [platform],” said Kazuya. “The next one on the Atomiswave will mark the sixth release, just like Metal Slug. And similarly to the Metal Slug, the development team seems like they want to give it all they've done from the past, so there might be some interesting changes. The details aren't concrete enough to be talked about, but it seems like we'll be making some dynamic changes to the characters.”
“We've worked with the NeoGeo for 13 years. That's a lot to think about. There have been talks in the past about when we'll stop supporting the NeoGeo, but this is going to be the real end. And that's really an indescribable feeling,”

Gamespy's Title Fight! The Ultimate Gaming Grudge
Posted by White_Pointer @ 7:40:00 AEST
The greatest video/computer games of all time, battling it out against each other to see who is the greatest of all. That's the premise behind Gamespy's "Title Fight! The Ultimate Gaming Grudge". Currently it's in the prevoting stage, to see which games make the cut into the final 64.

As far as fighting games are concerned, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat are both in the category "Arcade Classics 1985-2003" (why they chose MK and not MKII is a mystery). The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Double Dragon arcade games have made this category as well. Only one of them can go through, but these games are also up against other arcade classics as well. There's also a seperate category for the three games in the "Soul" series (Soul Edge/Soul Blade, Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur II) and of course only one of these three great games will make the cut.

It won't be long now before the prevoting ends and the real voting begins, so to vote for your favourite game (not just the fighting games) head on over to Gamespy and do it!

It's a debate that's been raging for well over a decade now. Yes...the question is, which is better? Traditional 2D fighters, or modern 3D fighters? The question is indeed a tough one. So which one do you prefer, do you like both, or doesn't it matter to you? Vote now!

Poll Results
Posted by White_Pointer @ 16:19:12 AEST
It's that time again where we create a new poll, but first, here's the results from the last poll:

Who makes/made the best fighting games?

24% - Midway
22.4% - Capcom
16.2% - Namco
13.3% - SNK
7.4% - I can't decide
5.4% - Other
4% - Rare
2.5% - Sammy
2.1% - Sega
2.1% -Tecmo

It was tightly contested, but it seems the majority of our site visitors prefer the Midway created fighting games, although Capcom was a close second.

Way of the Samurai 2 coming to PS2
Posted by White_Pointer @ 15:53:09 AEST
Capcom have announced that the previously Japan-only game Way of the Samurai 2 is headed for US shores, exclusive to the PS2. Although technically not a 1-on-1 fighter, it does have a lot of fighting elements as it combines fighting with adventure. Some of its features are:

  • Realistic sword fighting action based on traditional Japanese samurai films.
  • Outcomes that are determined by the choices a player makes, which include different scenarios and endings.
  • New sword positions and fighting techniques, which include twin-sword style and quick slash.
  • More than 400 special moves that vary according to the weapon used.
  • The ability to upgrade and collect more than 60 powerful swords by defeating enemies. Blades can then be strengthened at the blacksmith, and new techniques can be mastered.
  • A new one-slash kill system that lets players knock enemies off-balance with a hard attack or counterattack. It then allows them to finish off enemies with a one-slash hit.
  • More interactive settings that let players visit shops, talk to locals, and earn money through jobs or tasks.
  • The abilities to purchase and find an array of rare items throughout the game.
Capcom haven't set an exact release date yet, only that we should expect it to hit store shelves sometime in the US summer.

Sega gets new chairman...from Sammy
Posted by White_Pointer @ 15:15:42 AEST
Effective from February 17th, Sega has a new chairman in the form of Sammy president Hajime Satomi. Former chairman Hideki Sato has been pushed into the vice chairman's seat. Hisao Oguchi, the current Sega president, retains and will remain in his current role.

This news comes not long after Sammy acquired a whopping 22.4 percent of Sega in December last year, making Sammy the biggest shareholder in the Japanese Video Games giant. Earlier this month Sega announced that they would be working with Sammy in the arcade game business, possibly developing games for Sammy's Atomiswave hardware and merging their overseas operations.

What effect this change will have on Sega though isn't certain...but one wonders whether the rumours - that say Sammy has plans of completely taking over Sega - are indeed true.

Interactive Achievement Awards finalists announced
Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:40:01 AEST
The AIAS (Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences) has today announced the finalists for their 7th annual Interactive Achievement awards. The actual awards ceremony will be held on March 4th in the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

So how did fighting games fare in the list of finalists? Well, none have been nominated for overall game of the year unfortunately, but the finalists for the award of Console Fighting Game of the Year are:

  • Def Jam Vendetta, published by Electronic Arts, developed by EA Canada
  • Soul Calibur 2, published by Namco, developed by Namco
  • Dragonball Z: Budokai 2, published by Atari, developed by Dimps
  • Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, published by Sega, developed Sega – AM2
  • Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, published by THQ, developed by Yukes
  • War of the Monsters, published by SCEA, developed by Incognito

Why the hell they continue to classify wrestling games as fighters and not as action sports games like they should be is mind boggling. It'll be even more stupid if one of them wins the award. Let's hope common sense prevails and one of the real fighting games wins.

Soul Calibur 2 is also a finalist for the award for Outstanding Achievement in Animation.

There's 36 awards in total that are going to be given out. If you're interested in checking out the full list of finalists, head over to the AIAS website.

Top renting video games list
Posted by White_Pointer @ 21:19:22 AEST
This list covers the week ending February 8th. Another surprising week too, I might add. As far as fighting games are concerned, the only one to make the list this week was Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2, which ranked 5th (it has however dropped 2 places in the rankings since last week). I guess it doesn't matter to the masses that it's a poor game, as long as it has a strong license. Meh. What isn't surprising however is that the PS2 again dominated this area. Here's the full list:

Rank/Game/System

1/Mafia/PS2
2/Need for Speed: Underground/PS2
3/NFL Street/PS2
4/True Crime: Streets of L.A./PS2
5/Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2/PS2
6/Medal of Honor: Rising Sun/PS2
7/SOCOM II: U.S. Navy Seals/PS2
8/Tony Hawk's Underground/PS2
9/Madden NFL 2004/PS2

Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu confirmed for Europe
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:14:24 AEST
Don't ask me why, but Atari has announced today that they will be releasing their GBA fighter Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu in PAL territories next month.

"Building on the success of our current portfolio of DBZ titles, Taiketsu is the first DBZ fighting game for the GBA," said Martin Spiess, senior vice president of marketing, Atari Europe. "DBZ is a powerful franchise, enjoying a huge fan base around the world, who will all be excited to hear that this fast, fun new game be available in Europe in March."
It might be a powerful franchise, but if the European version is identical to the North American one, it's far, far from even a mediocre game. Don't believe me? Just take a look around at any site that's bothered to play it long enough to review it. It's right up there as contender for "worst fighting game ever".

Samurai Spirits Zero Special announced
Posted by White_Pointer @ 8:22:26 AEST
SNK/Playmore have announced on their official Samurai Spirits web site that a new game in the series is on it's way called Samurai Spirits Zero Special (the series is known as Samurai Shodown outside of Japan). This isn't an entirely new game...as the name suggests, it's more of an update to last year's Samurai Spirits Zero, with at least three new characters (the site hints at there being more), returning bosses from previous SS games, and a handful of changes to the combat system and gameplay balance which are as of yet unrevealed.

We'll have more information on this as it becomes available.

MK: Deception domains registered
Posted by White_Pointer @ 7:32:43 AEST
Well, we reported several weeks ago that Midway had registered the trademark name Mortal Kombat: Deception, indicating that at the very least they were strongly considering this to be the title of MK6. We've got some further evidence now that this is the case. We've been told that Midway have registered some domain names that relate to that title, and indeed, if you check them up, you'll discover that mortalkombatdeception.com and mkdeception.com have both been registered by Midway. With both these pieces of evidence, it seems very likely that this will indeed be the title of MK6, but we still await the official word from Midway.
Thanks to Scott Howell of Mortal Kombat Online for the tip-off!

Marvel vs EA?
Posted by White_Pointer @ 22:24:27 AEST
Well what can I say? The rumours were true.

Marvel Enterprises and Electronic Arts have just signed a two-way deal yesterday. EA will be developing a bunch of games, for this generation of consoles and also the next generation, that will pit Marvel super heroes against new heroes EA will be creating. Marvel's end of the bargain sees them with the exclusive licensing and marketing rights to EA's new super hero characters. This will most likely mean Marvel will create comic strips, cartoon shows, action figures etc of the new EA heroes.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, president and CEO of Marvel Enterprises.
"It's a unique opportunity, partnering with Marvel, to bring their renowned superheroes into original video game environments, as well as providing us an opportunity to create new heroes that will live in games, comic books and other licensing or media opportunities that Marvel presents," said John Riccitiello, president and COO for Electronic Arts. "Fans of both traditional Marvel comics as well as video games have a lot to be excited about, as they will be able to fight it out between established Marvel superheroes and EA's new heroes in original scenarios."
It's already begun too. The first fighting games to feature the two brands are already in development at EA's British Columbia studio in Canada.
We'll have more news on this as it becomes available. In the meantime, why not join our forums and discuss it with other fighting game fans?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles PAL release
Posted by White_Pointer @ 10:17:21 AEST
After Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released late last year in the USA, people in Europe and Australia would no doubt have been rubbing their hands together, eager to get the game that's available on all platforms (including PC). Unfortunately though we have some bad news for PAL gamers. According to EBGames, TMNT won't be seeing the light of day in PAL territories until sometimes in mid-April. Bummer! Just when it looked like PAL gamers weren't being shunned anymore, looks like again they are forced to wait several months more than NTSC territories to get their games. In this case, it's almost half a year. I guess the good news is that it's still coming...at least...

DBZ: Budokai 2 in top 10 rentals
Posted by White_Pointer @ 17:00:38 AEST
Occasionally, charts like this are released that detail what the top renting games are during a given week period. This one covers January 19th-25th 2004 (this is just console titles):

Rank / Title / Console / Publisher
1 / Need for Speed Underground / PS2 / EA
2 / True Crime: Streets of LA / PS2 / Activision
3 / Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 / PS2 / Atari
4 / Madden NFL 2004 / PS2 / EA
5 / Tony Hawk’s Underground / PS2 / Activision
6 / Medal of Honor Rising Sun / PS2 / EA
7 / NFL Street / PS2 / EA
8 / SOCOM II: U.S. Navy Seals / PS2 / SCEA
9 / The Sims: Bustin’ Out / PS2 / EA
10 / WWE Smackdown!: Here Comes the Pain / PS2 / THQ

The PS2 is quite clearly dominating the console rental market at the moment, and as far as fighting games are concerned, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 is obviously still a very popular rental, nailing down a solid 3rd most rented game for the given week.

Guilty Gear XX #Reload definitive Japan release set
Posted by White_Pointer @ 20:19:46 AEST
Well only a couple of days ago we reported that Sammy's upcoming XBox Love enabled title Guilty Gear XX #Reload will be released in April. Well, we have good news and bad news. The good news is, we now we have a final release date set in stone. The bad news is, at least so far, it's only for Japan (unless of course you live in Japan!). Sammy themselves have announced that the game is scheduled to hit store shelves in Japan on April 29th and will carry a price tag of 4800 yen (about US$45). Sammy however have not said anything about a possible release outside of Japan. Let's hope Sammy decide to expand the game's coverage to NTSC and PAL countries.

John Tobias talks about arcades and online play
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:00:20 AEST
John Tobias (co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Project Leader of Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus) has recently been interviewed at TRMK and given his thoughts on the decrease in fighting game competition in arcades and if online play is a viable alternative. This is what he had to say:

Tao Feng single player game is generally the Quest mode. That’s kind of the method of facing your boss in the game. In reguards to online play, we would have loved to have had Tao Feng function online. I think when we started and where Xbox Live was at the time, didn’t coincide with us building the engine. I think that all fighting games at some point have to have some kind of online play ability. There are some latency issues that have to be solved for that to work well. I think that with the demise of the arcade the competitive aspect of fighting games has gone away, but I think online can kind of bring that back. It’s exciting to see the Capcom game that just came out. They actually do it fairly well but there is some lag that occurs on occasion, but it’s not too bad and it injects some of the competitive element back into the genre. I think that’s important because with the demise of the arcade the competitive nature of the game only happens when you’ve got a friend over. That’s where the single player experience has become so important. But like I say that with broadband creeping up more and more and with Xbox Live there is a chance to reinvigorate fighting games with the competitive nature that has gotten lost over the years. It is depressing going to arcades and there is no one and nothing there. If there is a new game out you are lucky to find it.

More info on next MK movie
Posted by White_Pointer @ 19:02:33 AEST
We've got some more information (at least, some more POSSIBLE information) on the next MK movie. Apparently, at least according to imdb.com, the movie will be titled Mortal Kombat: Domination and will more or less be based on the story of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. We know already that Linden Ashbey is returning to play Johnny Cage, and now there's also rumours that Christopher Lambert will be returning to once again play the character of Raiden. Let's hope this is the case!

Take not however that this is by no means solid information and may well prove to be wrong, but it's worth keeping in the back of your mind. The only real confirmed information from New Line Cinema is that yes, it's being made. Thanks to forum member FieNd-2 for the heads up.
