Changes to registration
« on: August 11, 2006, 02:40:33 AM »
Some of you may have noticed that recently we had a real problem with spammers (most likely spam bots) coming into the forums advertising everything from house insurance to adult sites.

While all of these topics were removed, and every one of the spammer's names have been IP banned, they just kept coming.

This prompted a change in the way we register new members. From now on, it will no longer be an automatic process. After signing up you will now receive an e-mail with a link and a verification code. You will then need to verify your account details before you can log in and start making posts.

We are sorry if this inconveniences anyone, but it was about the only option we had to stop the spammers. Hopefuly now though we won't be getting any more trouble.

Thanks for your patience.

It's conceivable that bots could work with the link too, although I haven't heard of one that does. Does the forum software support security codes that have been obfuscated within an image?

Yah the image security code thingy should also be implemented just as an extra security in case bots can indeed automatically click the links inside emails. Jus what I think.

Not natively, however I have now installed a mod that supports it. It should put an end to the spambots.
